New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall brings readers the next stand-alone novel in a thrilling new sci-fi romance series full of action and humor.

Simone has hunted and slain psychotic vampires night after night for hundreds of years and desperately needs a change. When the leader of the Immortal Guardians offers her an opportunity to guard ten mortal women who are venturing to another planet, she dives right in and finds traveling into space and meeting amazing alien races just as exciting as she'd hoped… until an enemy attacks. Simone saves everyone she can before she's thrust into an escape pod and the ship explodes. Alone, fearing some—if not all—of her friends have been killed, she vows to seek vengeance.

Despite his fierce reputation and propensity for violating the law, Janwar has formed a friendship with strait-laced Prince Taelon of Lasara. When the prince's ship is destroyed, Janwar joins the massive Aldebarian Alliance-wide search and rescue mission and soon locates the Gathendien ship that launched the attack. An odd thing happens, however, as he and his crew stealthily approach it. The lifeforms inside begin to perish, two or three at a time in quick succession. Much to his surprise, someone else has reached the ship first: one of the very Earth women he hoped to rescue.

Fascinatingly fierce, Simone bands together with Janwar and his crew to search for her missing friends and wreak havoc upon those who wish to harm them. She also widens eyes, drops jaws, and sparks laughter and mischief as she banishes the warriors' world-weariness and makes each day seem like a new adventure. The friendship that grows between Janwar and Simone swiftly deepens into love. But the enemy warriors they face are tenacious and boast more weapons in their arsenal than the alliance knows. Can Janwar, Simone, and such a small crew vanquish them?

Excerpt

She laughed as they left the lounge and headed toward the area sporting the crew’s sleeping quarters.

Janwar’s heartbeat increased when Simone took his hand in hers and squeezed it.

“This has been such an amazing day,” she said, “that I admit I’m sad to see it end.”

He was, too. “You must be tired, though, after the big battle.”

She tilted her head first one way, then the other, considering it. “Maybe a little.”

Their steps slowed as they turned onto the corridor their respective rooms were on.

“Do you know what my favorite part was?” she asked.

“Of the day or the battle?”

“The day.”

“The battle,” he answered with a grin.

“Nope. Guess again.”

Hmm. “The stroll in the park?”

“Nope, but that was a close second. Guess again.”

He’d thought for sure it would be one of those two. “Visiting a bar full of aliens on an alien planet?”

“Nope. But damn, I had a big day today, didn’t I?”

He laughed as they halted outside her door. “Very big. What was your favorite part?”

She stepped closer, tilting her head back to smile up at him. “The good-luck kiss you gave me.”

Surprise swept through him, followed closely by desire as he recalled the feel and taste of her. “What?”

“I’m not used to being the aggressor,” she confessed softly. “There aren’t many female Immortal Guardians on Earth. And breaking up with someone you know you’ll run into over and over again for hundreds or thousands of years afterward can be awkward, so we females tend to be very careful not to do anything that would invite amorous attention.” She inched closer. “I haven’t… dated in a very long time, Janwar. I’m out of practice, behind the times, and honestly don’t know what the hell I’m doing.”

She was setting him on fire. That’s what she was doing.

His heart began to batter his ribs. “What do you know?”

Amber light flared to life in her alluring brown eyes. “That I want another kiss.”

Srul, yes. Dipping his head, he pressed his lips to hers. Not with the desperation he’d felt the first time he’d kissed her, but with the same wonder he’d seen on her face in the park.

Simone—the remarkable woman he already cherished as a friend and whose company he constantly craved—wanted him.

Him.

Her lips were soft and warm beneath his, the kiss they shared gentle and full of affection.

He drew back just enough to break the tantalizing contact and stared down at her.

“Magnificent,” she whispered.

He chuckled, amused by the description he’d applied to himself earlier to make her laugh.

“I am so drawn to you,” she said with a smile.

What those words did to him.

The first reviews have begun to roll in, and I could not be happier.

Caffeinated Reviewer gave THE AKSELI a fabulous 5-star review. Here's another snippet:

"Simone is a take-no-prisoners kind of gal with a bright, sunny personality... The first meet between her and Janwar let me know I was in for a treat. The chemistry, humor, and admiration were so genuine."

Favorite Quote Friday & the Latest News

Happy Friday! I hope this finds you all safe and well. Hurricane Nicholas hit us earlier this week, but we ended up on the cleaner side of the storm. We had some hard rains and strong enough winds to strip the bark from our elm tree and litter the yard with tree limbs. But my area didn't flood, and the power only went out a couple of times. So we fared well. I hope everyone else made it through safely.

Thank you, everyone who has pre-ordered my next release: An Immortal Guardians Companion! You made it an Amazon and Barnes&Noble Bestseller! Woohoo!! You rock! I hope you'll enjoy it. If this is your first time hearing about it, it contains 90 pages* of deleted scenes that I think you'll like. There's also a Bonus Scene from Cliff's Descent that I think you'll enjoy. Here's the blurb:

Hello, all!

Your favorite character, Sheldon, here. If you’re an Immortal Guardians fan, I think you’re really going to enjoy this companion. Dianne has packed it with ninety pages of deleted scenes that feature many of the characters you’ve come to know and love plus a bonus scene from Cliff’s Descent that you won’t want to miss.

You’ll also find every character interview Dianne has ever written inside these pages. (Those of you who’ve encountered a few in the past know the ones I conduct are the best.) If you’ve never read one or you missed a few, then pick up a copy, sit back, and laugh while I interview Immortal Guardians and the loves of their lives for the network. Even Chris Reordon and Todd down at network headquarters get in on the action.

I also interview Dianne and ply her with questions I thought you’d like to ask her. Throw in a couple of short stories, what inspired the Immortal Guardians series, and a brief Who Does What Now? list, and you’re bound to enjoy it.

See you on the inside!

Your friend,

Sheldon

Immortal Guardian Richart’s immensely competent Second

And the most beloved character in the Immortal Guardians series (at least in his mind).

*Just a note: that's 90 manuscript pages. In the trade paperback, with its larger page size that can accommodate more words, it may be a little less than that. And in the ebook, the "deleted scenes" page count may be noticeably larger than that. In the past, I've had 430-page books show up as 500+ pages on some ebook vendor sites.

"Ms. Duvall has provided this reader with everything I could hope for."

Cliff's Descent was voted Book of the Month at Long and Short Reviews!! Woohoo!! Thank you so much!! Reviews continue to roll in for it. And I could not be happier. I'm so thrilled you're enjoying Cliff and Emma's story.

Caffeinated Reviewer gave Cliff's Descent an absolutely fabulous review.

"Thank you, Dianne Duvall. Cliff deserved his own story, and I loved every minute of its telling... Kirsten Potter out did herself with this performance. The emotions, particularly Cliff's, and his immortal friends, were so well done."

Cliff's Descent also received a wonderful review from eBookObsessed.

"Every author dreams of writing a character so beloved that their readers just can't get enough, and Dianne Duvall succeeded monumentally with Cliff. The readers just can't get enough of this brave and noble man."

If you're new to my Immortal Guardians series...

I thought I would share something else Long and Short Reviews said: "Even though it might be coming from the long side of the series, I truly believe that a reader jumping into the Immortal Guardians' world could enjoy this story as a starter. I say that because it is told from Cliff's side. He can only tell us what he heard or experienced from his point of view."

And I've seen other reviewers and new-to-the-series readers and audiobook lovers say the same. So feel free to jump in with this one if the blurb entices you. 😉

This has been quite an eventful week. I'm really looking forward to the weekend, so let's start it off with another Favorite Quote Friday. Today, I'd like to share one of my favorite scenes from Cliff's Descent for those who haven't given it a read or a listen. (If you like audiobooks, I highly recommend you look up Kirsten Potter. She's a fantastic narrator!) It features Cliff and Emma.

___________________________

A loud knock shook her door.

Emma damn near jumped off the sofa. Her neck popped as she jerked her head around to stare at the door with wide eyes. Her heart began to slam against her ribs as fear trickled through her.

Who the hell would be knocking on her door this late at night?

No one she knew would do so without calling first. And deliverymen and -women didn't drop off packages at freaking midnight.

As quickly and quietly as a mouse, she darted into her bedroom and grabbed the 9mm her father had bought her and trained her to use. Flicking off the safety, she returned to the living room and swung by the coffee table to tuck her phone in her pajama pants pockets in case she needed to call 911. Only then did she cautiously approach the door.

Another knock thundered through the house.

Adrenaline spiking, she peered through the door's peephole.

Shock rippled through her. "Oh shit," she whispered. Setting the gun on the coat rack bench beside her, she hastily unlocked the dead bolt, then the knob, and flung open the door.

Cliff stood before her, his big body blocking her view of the yard.

Emma gaped up at him.

He wore the standard blacks of network guards covered with a long black coat similar to that of an Immortal Guardian. His face, neck, and hands were streaked with blood. His clothing glistened with wet patches. And his eyes shone bright amber.

She had never seen them so bright and knew it meant that whatever emotion roiled inside him was intense.

Panic consumed her. "Cliff," she breathed. Stepping onto the porch, she swiftly glanced around, terrified she might see soldiers in black approaching with weapons raised.

When none materialized, she grabbed his wrist and yanked him inside.

Her hands shook as she closed and bolted the door, her fingers leaving little streaks of blood on the white surface.

Spinning around, she stared up at him. "What happened? Are you hurt?" Her gaze swept over him, noting every wet patch on his clothing, every ruby-red splotch on his skin. Was that his blood or someone else's? "How did you get here? Are you hurt?" Closing the distance between them, she began to run her hands over his chest in search of wounds.

Cliff grabbed her wrists to halt her frantic movements. His glowing eyes dropped to the points at which they touched. He drew his thumbs over her skin as if to confirm she was real. Then he met her gaze. "I need your shower," he said, voice gruff.

Heart pounding, she nodded. As soon as he released her, she pointed. "It's through there."

Without another word, he strode toward it. His heavy boots thudded loudly in the quiet as he entered the short hallway, then turned in to the bathroom. The door closed. Water began to pound tile.

Emma didn't move.

Cliff was here. In her home. What the hell had happened?

New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall brings readers the second stand-alone novel in a thrilling new sci-fi romance series full of action, humor, and happily-ever-afters.

Eliana's life has never been what one might term ordinary. At least, it hasn't been for a very long time. As a powerful Immortal Guardian, she spends her nights hunting and slaying psychotic vampires that most of humanity doesn't even realize exist. Then an opportunity arises that instantly makes her extraordinary existence seem downright boring. The leader of the Immortal Guardians asks her to guard a group of mortals who are embarking upon a voyage across the galaxy to the planet Lasara. How could she possibly say no?

In no time at all, Eliana is hurtling through space on board a Lasaran battleship and getting to know not one but two alien races. It's the most exciting adventure of her long life... until the ship is unexpectedly attacked. Amid the chaos and destruction that follow, she valiantly helps everyone she can before an explosion renders her unconscious. When Eliana awakens, she finds herself alone, floating in space, clad only in a spacesuit, with no ship in sight. Alone--that is--except for the warm, deep voice that carries over the comm in her helmet.

Commander Dagon and the crew of the Segonian battleship Ranasura respond to a distress call from their Lasaran allies and join a massive Alliance-wide search-and-rescue mission. He quickly achieves communication with a lone Earthling female and races toward her. Every time they speak, his fascination with her grows and he becomes more desperate to reach her before her oxygen supply runs out. Her strength, bravery, and humor entice him, even more so when she defies all odds and they meet in person.

As he and Eliana embark upon a quest to find her missing friends, a bond swiftly grows between them that deepens with every laugh and smile and tender touch they share. But they are not the only ones searching for Earthling survivors. When Eliana herself becomes the hunted and their enemies begin to close in, can the two of them fight their way to victory?

To celebrate the big release, I thought I'd share another peek into the pages of The Segonian that features Eliana and Dagon:

“I meant what I said in there. I won’t let him hurt you or the others.”

Eliana said it with such endearing earnestness that he wanted to draw her into a hug.

Instead, he arched a brow. “Because you care about us?”

A flush crept into her cheeks as she smiled. “Yes, I care about you. How could I not? You’re all so damn appealing.” She glanced at the closed door, then sent him a wink as she whispered, “But you’re my favorite.”

Leaning down until his lips nearly touched her ear, he whispered back, “You’re my favorite, too.” He pressed his lips to the soft skin of her neck. “And I plan to prove it again tonight.” When he straightened, she stared up at him with brown eyes that acquired an amber glow. His pulse leaped when she slid her tongue across her lower lip as though she could already taste his kiss.

He shook his head. “So damn appealing.”

“Awwww.” Smiling, she patted his chest. “You used an Earth curse word to describe me. That’s so sweet.”

He laughed. “Appealing and odd,” he qualified.

She wrinkled her nose. "Yeah. I was hoping it would take you longer to figure that last part out."

Reaching across the table, he clasped Eliana's free hand.

She gave it a grateful squeeze. "Not much of a dinner companion, am I? I've barely said a thing all evening."

He smoothed his thumb across her soft skin. "Quiet doesn't trouble me when I'm with you, milessia."

It's time once more for Favorite Quote Friday! Today I thought I'd share a quiet moment that takes place between Eliana and Dagon fairly early in the book:

_________________________________

Dagon left his office and made his way down to the infirmary.

Adaos looked up when he entered.

Eliana lay curled on her side, covered by a sheet. Though dark wavy tresses hid much of her face, she appeared to be sleeping deeply.

“She still rests,” Adaos murmured.

“Her injuries?”

“All damage to her skeletal system has healed completely. Some of the damage to her musculature and skin has as well. The damage to her organs is still repairing.”

“Did you give her a silna to accelerate her healing?” Even with the serum, it would take Segonian warriors longer to recuperate from such wounds.

Adaos shook his head. “A silna wasn’t necessary. Her ability to repair and regenerate rivals that of the Sectas with their nanodocs.”

“Amazing.” Dagon crouched next to the bed. Reaching out, he gently drew the hair back from Eliana’s face and tucked it behind her ear. “She’s too thin,” he whispered, noting the prominent cheekbones. Though the burns had healed, some of the cuts and bruising remained. “Did you provide her with sustenance before she fell asleep?”

“Yes. I also fed her fluids and nutrition intravenously.”

“She doesn’t like needles.”

“She slept through it.”

Eliana’s eyelashes fluttered. Her lids rose, revealing deep brown eyes bereft of the amber glow. She studied him a moment, then offered him a sleepy smile. One small hand burrowed out from under the covers and stretched toward him. Soft fingers came to rest on his cheek and stroked the stubble there. “Dagon.”

Warmth unfurled in his chest at the tender touch. His pulse picked up its pace. “Eliana.”

It's time for the first Favorite Quote Friday of 2021! There are now less than three weeks to go until the release of The Segonian! I'm so excited!! Here is another peek into its pages that features Eliana and Dagon:

_________________________________

Dagon studied her, trying to ignore the unconsciously smooth sway of her hips and focus instead on the myriad of questions that mentally bombarded him.

She glanced up and caught him staring. “What?”

“You aren’t at all intimidated by my soldiers, are you?”

“No. Should I be?”

“They are all fierce warriors.”

She grinned. “I am, too.”

Had she been another, he might have laughed. She seemed so small and delicate. But he knew what she had been through, what she had suffered and survived. He’d read the accounts of the Lasarans who credited her with saving their lives. And she had incapacitated Adaos while so weak she could barely stand.

He thought fierce an apt description for her.
