Favorite Heroines Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Favorite Heroine Giveaway Hop, hosted by Herding Cats & Burning Soup.  We're sharing our favorite kickass heroines with you! So come join the fun, meet some awesome ladies, and find out why they're the best of the best.

I have always been a huge fan of strong, kickass heroines, which is why you will find one in every novel or novella I write.  As much as I love horror movies, those that feature women who trip over their own feet, then lie there and whimper as the murderer or monster slowly walks toward them always make me roll my eyes and sigh.  Either that or shout, "Oh, come on!  He's moving so slowly you can't even consider it a stroll!  Get up and run already!"  :-)

So today I thought I would introduce you to Alyssa, the heroine of A Sorceress of His Own, the first book in my new series The Gifted Ones.  Alyssa is as tough as they come, even riding into battle alongside the hero.  She will always be favorite of mine not just for this reason, but also because her book inspired my Immortal Guardians series and the kickass women those books feature.  :-)

A USA TODAY Bestseller

Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.

For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon's side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed—or cursed—with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father.

All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon's life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything—even the wrath of his king—to be with her.

Lucky is Reading Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Lucky is Reading Giveaway Hop!  Since St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner, the theme for this fun hop is luck.  :-)

One of the questions I'm often asked as a writer is whether I'm a plotter or a pantser.  I am completely and wholeheartedly a pantser.  I don't create a detailed outline of my stories before I sit down to write them.  Nor did I outline my Immortal Guardians series before I wrote the first book.  And I am very lucky that I didn't.  If I had plotted out the series in the beginning, deciding whose story I would write in what order, I would have never written Zach's story—Night Unbound, Immortal Guardians Book 5.

When I first introduced Zach's character, I intended for him to remain a dangerous and shadowy background character.  Then a scene in Phantom Shadows, Immortal Guardians Book 3, made me sit up and take notice.  (For fans of the series:  It was the lollipop scene.)  Much to my surprise and pleasure, Zach rapidly became one of my favorite characters in the series.  And I had such fun writing his book.

So I definitely feel lucky that I'm a pantser.  ;-)

"Book after book, Duvall brings her readers complex,
fascinating tales of romance, danger and loyalty."
—RT Book Reviews

For centuries, Lisette d'Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can't bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians' command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for—and a man she knows has been declared a traitor.

Zach is an exile, a loner. He won't defend himself against false accusations or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he'll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of super-vamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?

Excerpt

“Why are you doing this?”  Confusion colored Zach’s voice.

Lisette set the pasta down and gave him her full attention.  “Doing what?”

He hesitated.  “Helping me.  Being . . . kind to me.”

Why indeed?  She kept getting deeper and deeper and deeper into this . . . whatever this was.  “You saved my life.”

His lips tilted up in a faint smile that seemed to reflect cynicism, relief, and disappointment all at once.  “Ah.  You feel obligated.  I understand now.”

“Not obligated,” she corrected.  “Grateful.  And . . . ”

“And?” he prompted.

“Don’t you know?” she asked curiously.  “Haven’t you looked into my thoughts?”

“No.”

Interesting.  Seth and David seemed to lack any reservations when it came to reading the minds of their charges.  And, if she were honest, she and Étienne intruded on their friends’ thoughts far more often than they should.  One would think Zach, perhaps the antithesis of Seth, would possess even fewer scruples.

Or did he lie?

Could he be testing her to see if she would tell him the truth?

Hell, what did she have to lose at this point?

Crossing the kitchen, she stopped a foot away from Zach and tilted her head back to look up at him.

“Ask me again,” she ordered softly.

“Why are you doing this?” he murmured.

“Because I’m drawn to you, Zach.”

His heart began to beat faster.

As did hers.  “I’m drawn to you in a way that makes me want to risk everything just for the chance to know more of you.”

His eyes lit with a mild golden glow.  “Why?”

She gave her head a slow shake.  “I don’t know.  But I suspect . . . I hope . . . that it’s the same for you, that that’s why you came here—to me—when you were so badly injured and needed help.”

He raised one of his hands and, almost as though she were a bird he feared he might frighten away, captured a damp strand of hair that dangled in front of her ear, testing its texture with his fingers.  “I came to you because you were all I could think of while I was being tortured.”  He drew the lock closer to his face and breathed in the citrus scent of her shampoo.  “I came to you because you were all that enabled me to endure it.”

I am in so much trouble here, Lisette thought.

Excerpt

“Don’t do it,” she counseled herself softly as a compulsion grew within her.

Yet again, the words didn’t stop her.

Sighing, she looked up and searched the rooftops around her, waiting to see if a dark, winged figure would separate itself from the shadows.

It didn’t.

“You knew he wouldn’t be there,” she muttered with disgust, and bent to retrieve the bowie knives.

“Who wouldn’t?” a deep voice queried softly.

Gasping, she straightened and spun around.  “You.”

Just as she had imagined a thousand times, a tall figure emerged from the darkness and slowly approached her.  Damned near seven feet tall, he towered over her five-foot six-inch form.  Dark leather pants.  No shirt.  Just a leanly muscled form bereft of hair except for the raven tresses that adorned his head and fell beneath his shoulders.

Behind him spread beautiful wings that would span twelve or fourteen feet when fully extended.  Nearly translucent, the feathers that graced them were the same tan as his skin at the wings’ base and darkened to black at their tips.  Her fingers curled as she remembered touching them.  Just once.  So soft.  Like the hair on a newborn baby’s head.

“Zach,” she breathed.  The last time she had seen him he had saved her life.

Stopping several feet away, he closed his eyes for a moment.  “You remember my name.”

“Of course I do,” she said, heart racing.  “It’s only been four months.”

His eyes opened, so dark a brown they were nearly black.  “Is that how long it’s been?  Four months?”

She nodded.

“Who were you looking for?” he asked.

“You,” she admitted, though she knew she shouldn’t.

A month ago, when curiosity and no recent sightings had driven her to ask about this intriguing, yet formidable immortal, Seth had not reacted well.  Face dark with rage, he had instructed her to forget Zach and to stay away from him.

Zach tilted his head to one side.  “Why?”

“I . . . ” Can’t stop thinking about you.  “I wanted to apologize.”

“For what?”

Was that moisture forming on his forehead?  Even immortals her age could regulate their body’s temperature without thinking about it.  Though the night was unusually warm, his body should be cool.

“For what?” he asked again.

She swallowed hard, wishing now she had thought of another answer.  This man possessed almost as much power as Seth.  Pissing him off probably wasn’t a very good idea.

He glanced to the side, as though he heard something she couldn’t.  “I don’t have much time,” he murmured, and returned his attention to her.

“I wanted to apologize because . . . I think I said something that made Seth angry at you.”

His eyes flashed golden.  “What?”

Thunder rumbled overhead, drawing her wary gaze.  “After we fought Donald’s mercenaries that last time, I asked Seth why he didn’t just do what you did when you came to my rescue and kill all of our enemies with a thought instead of letting us risk our existence in battle with them.”  She shook her head.  “The question seemed to anger him.”  An understatement.  “But that anger seemed to be directed at . . . you.”

A shadow formed on Zach’s chest.

No.  Not a shadow.  A large bruise.  Another darkened the area around one eye.

“I thought . . . ”

A long gash, like that cut by a whip, streaked across his chest, parting the bruise.

What the hell?

Her gaze darted all around them, seeking but finding no assailant.  “I thought,” she stuttered, “that might be why I haven’t seen you around.”  More gashes opened on his flesh as he stared at her, his handsome face expressionless.  “I thought Seth might have told you to stay away.”  An ugly abrasion formed on his temple.  Blood trailed down to the edge of his strong jaw and drip, drip, dripped onto his broad shoulder.  She took a step forward.  “Zach, what’s happening to you?”

In what seemed like seconds, bleeding lash marks striped his arms, shoulders, chest, and abdomen.  His jaw clenched as, beneath her horrified gaze, bones in his wings began to break.

Swearing, she raced to his side, swords raised to combat . . . whoever the hell was doing this to him.

Feathers fluttered to the ground at his feet as he staggered.  Those still attached to his wings began to glisten with crimson liquid as wound after wound appeared.

“Who’s doing this?” she shouted, panic threatening.  Who could move so fast that even she couldn’t see them?

“I can’t stay,” he whispered, blood painting his teeth and staining his lips.

“Who’s doing this to you?” she repeated urgently.  “How can I help you?”

He shook his head.  “You can’t.  I can’t believe you would even want to, knowing . . . ”

“Knowing what?”

He grunted as another bone snapped.

“Zach!”

His eyes rolled back as his knees bent.

Lisette dropped her swords and thrust her arms out to catch him as he sank toward the ground.

A warm breeze washed over her as he vanished inches before they touched.

Shaken, she stared down at her empty arms.  “Zach?”

Turning in a circle, she waited for whatever unseen force had attacked him to turn its attention on her and begin inflicting wounds.

It didn’t.

“Zach!”

Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway Hop

Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Hot Halloween Heroes Giveaway Hop, hosted by Felicity Heaton and Indie Romance Books!  There are so many things I love about paranormal romances.  At the top of the list, though, would be the powerful preternatural males that inhabit them.  They come in quite a wide variety.  Some are tortured.  Some are light-hearted.  Some reclusive.  Some fun-loving people persons.  Some are overbearing and dictatorial.  And some can’t resist a strong woman.

Étienne d’Alençon, the hero of Darkness Rises, falls into the last category (although he can be a light-hearted, fun-loving tease at times, too).  Étienne has always admired strong women.  And he has made no secret of it throughout my Immortal Guardians series.  So when he sees Krysta Linz, a mere mortal, take on four vampires by herself, he is instantly intrigued.  How has this entrancing vampire hunter escaped the Immortal Guardians’ notice for the past six years?  How does she hold her own so well against psychotic vampires with preternatural speed and strength?  Unable to resist her lure, he endeavors to learn more about her and soon the sparks begin to fly as he struggles to convince her that not everyone with fangs and glowing eyes is her enemy.

"Featuring a fascinating take on vampires, Darkness Rises is a thrilling, action-packed, suspenseful, funny, steamy paranormal romance readers won't be able to put down until the last page."
— Affaire de Coeur Magazine

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires.  Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple—she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in.  Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker.  Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally.  He's a vampire, all right, but different.  Mysterious.  Handsome.  And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Étienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years—long enough to know that Krysta is special.  He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords.  Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too.  He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them.  The stakes for a mortal are high.  But the cost to his heart might be higher. . .

Excerpt

The unmistakable shick, ting, and clang of metal striking metal split the air several blocks away.

“Oh, no you don’t,” Krysta growled and took off running.  She didn’t care that she raced down a sharply sloped hill that would make it damned near impossible to stop once she got going.  She didn’t care that she ran with an unsheathed sword in each hand.  (Her mother and father’s frequent admonitions not to run with scissors chose that moment to dance through her head.)  She didn’t even care that anyone who saw her would likely call the police and report a madwoman fleeing through Chapel Hill, waving deadly weapons, and get her arrested.

She had only one goal in mind:  Get to those damned vampires before Mystery Man did whatever the hell he’d been doing for the past two weeks and disappeared.

Her heart pounding in her chest, she honed in on the battle’s location and managed to put on the brakes enough to zip around the corner at a speed that would keep her from rolling ass over elbows downhill.

She jerked to a halt and stared.

The darkened alley was deserted except for a dumpster about twenty-five yards away and — she released a growl of fury — a pair of jeans, a bloody blue sweatshirt, and a pair of bright red Chucks spread out on the pavement as if they had been laid out by some kid’s mother.

Krysta sheathed one of her swords, stomped over the place a vampire had clearly fallen, and grabbed the sweatshirt.  “Oh, come on!” she shouted, her voice echoing on the somnolent night.  She shook the sticky clothing at the sky.  “Where are you?” she demanded.  Turning in a circle, she examined every nook and cranny at street level, then peered up at the rooftops.

She could see no sign of Mystery Man.  Had he already left?

Krysta tossed the shirt down in disgust.  “This is bullsh**.”

A low chuckle wafted on the night.

Eyes widening, she drew her second sword and turned in a slow circle.  “Damn it!  Show yourself!”

“Well, since you asked so nicely,” a deep voice laced with a French accent purred behind her.

Gasping, she spun around and swung a shoto.

Once more, he caught her wrist.  “Careful.”  The warning was gentle, carrying neither malice nor anger.

Krysta stared.

His touch sent electricity tickling its way up her arm.  His flesh was warm, his long fingers free of callouses.

Her heart slammed against her ribs as butterflies erupted in her stomach.  She should be furious.  Frightened.  Instead, she felt as excited as she would on a first date.

Crap.

Stepping back, she withdrew her arm from his grasp.

Dropping his hand, he tilted his head and studied her with those entrancing amber eyes.

Yeah, he was hot all right.

Short midnight hair glinted in the moonlight.  Faint stubble shadowed a strong jaw.  Straight nose.  Broad shoulders.  What was clearly a well-developed, muscular build beneath a black T-shirt that clung to him courtesy of the vampire blood that saturated its front.  Slim waist.  Slim hips.  All revealed by the gap in the long black coat he wore.

She didn’t let her gaze stray further.  The last thing she wanted to do while facing him was blush like a school girl if he had a nice package.

His tempting lips stretched in a slow smile.

Fall Into Romance Hop

Welcome to the Fall Into Romance Hop, hosted by The Romance Reviews!  Join us as we celebrate favorite summer reads, fall releases we're looking forward to, and more.  Hopefully you'll find a nice selection of books to add to your TBR pile and will win lots of prizes as you do.  Did I mention there's a giveaway at every stop?  ;-)

I admit I've had little to no reading time of late.  My own TBR pile now towers near the ceiling, every book I add threatening to topple it.  And I'm sure I'll be adding a few more after this hop.  So, since I've been consumed with preparing for my next book's release (instead of delving into one of the books taunting me from the corner), I thought I would introduce you to it and its characters.

Darkness Rises is the fourth book in my Immortal Guardians series and features Krysta and Étienne.  Étienne d'Alençon is a French immortal, roughly two hundred years old, who spends his nights hunting the psychotic vampires who prey upon humans.  He also has always admired strong women.

Mortal Krysta Linz is as strong as they come.  Once the victim of a vicious vampire attack, she has dedicated her life to slaying every blood-sucking vampire on the planet . . . until a tall, dark, handsome man with glowing amber eyes and fangs joins her in one of her battles and saves her life.  How can she feel so drawn to him?  He's a vampire — the enemy — isn't he?

If he isn't, why does she feel as though she has gone from being the hunter to the hunted?
